Having itself spent about N8.9 Trillion, a record sum, on infrastructure and capital alone since its inception, the Buhari administration is encouraging State governments in the country to follow suit.

Such spending on infrastructural development would not only help position the States to become major industrial hubs, but also yield multiplier economic benefits, while at the same time attracting more investors from around the world, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this on Friday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, where he flagged off the construction of an housing estate and the Dakkada Tower as part of activities marking the 34th Anniversary of the State’s creation.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel received the Vice President at the airport, alongside other dignitaries, including the former Governors of Cross River and Benue States: Mr. Donald Duke and Senator Gabriel Suswam. Others top government officials at the events included members of the National Assembly, top State government officials, including the Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor, Mr. Moses Ekpo, the Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta, Senator Ita Enang, among others.

Bringing with him to the State the warm felicitations of President Muhammadu Buhari to the Governor, the government and people of the State, the Vice President stated that the President “asked that I specially congratulate you, Mr. Governor, and the good people of Akwa Ibom State on the 34th Anniversary of this great State.”

The Vice President observed that the focus of the Akwa Ibom State government on infrastructure development is significantly in sync with the centerpiece of the Federal Government’s economic agenda.

“As you are aware, since the inception of our administration Mr. President has prioritised the development of infrastructure: roads, rail, power and broadband; and despite the severe economic headwinds we have experienced in the past 6 years, we have invested more than any other administration in infrastructure," the VP asserted.

He disclosed that "as of last year, we had expended over N7.6 Trillion on infrastructure alone (and about N8.9 Trillion on the entire capital expenditure)."

While the world grapples with COVID-19, many people including, young persons die of heart failure, thus necessitating the need for everyone in Cross River to be more aware of the importance of ensuring good health and fitness.

With the theme for 2021 World Heart Day being "Harnessing the power of digital health to improve awareness, prevention and management of CVD globally", State Ministry of Health in collaboration with over 12 fitness clubs, staged a 12km walk through the Calabar Carnival routes to mark the World Heart Day and sensitize people on the dangers of cardiovascular disease and the need for regular exercise in ensuring healthy living.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu disclosed that Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) remains the world’s number one killer, resulting in an annual 18.6 million deaths across the globe.

According to her, the disease has many causes ranging from smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, to air pollution and less common conditions such as Chagas disease and cardiac amyloidosis. She called on everyone to reduce the intake of alcohol and cigarettes.

"For the people living with CVD, COVID-19 has been heartbreaking. They have been more at risk of developing severe complications from different forms of the virus. Many have been afraid to attend routine check up. Many persons don’t even know they are hypertensive. Even in recent times, many have slumped and died from cardiovascular disease. The need for everyone to be aware and get involved in activities that will reduce the risk of dying from heart disease or failure can not be over emphasized.

“Our daily exercise and regular medical check up is very important. I use this opportunity to call those living with CVD to immediately adhere to the doctor instructions on medication, ensure they eat healthy and exercise as well as sleep as necessary", Dr Edu said.

The Chairman of Healthy Billionaires Fitness Club, Mr William Archibong Jr disclosed that the walk aims to encourage a fitness and healthy lifestyle, which ultimately leads to more productivity and serenity of the mind.

"It is not enough to work from Monday to Saturday or Sunday; you must find time to keep fit and shed off excess weight. It will help you to be mentally fit and be in a position to cope with your activities,’’ he said.

Top government functionaries who took part in the walk include the Commissioners for Tourism, Mr Eric Anderson; Solid Mineral, Mr George O'Ben-Etchi among others. The event was sponsored by Zenith Bank.
