• 5 reasons you consider before popping your pimple.

    1. You will scar your skin.

If it is a deep cystic pimple, popping it will lead to a deep scar wound on your face. You will know from the amount of blood that comes out, almost as if you cut yourself.

    2. It makes you have more pimples.

Bring a pimple down can lead to many more down. The bacteria and pus in one pimple's spread to other part of the face.

    3. It slows the healing process.

A pimple in your body reacting to dirt and bacteria. If you wait a little longer the pimple will probably dry and shrivel by itself but bursting it prematurely your skin doesn't heal.

    4. Your face looks worse.

The consequence of bursting one pimple is redness, swelling and inflammation.

    5. You tear your skin.

When you are bursting a pimple, you are forcefully pushing the contents of the pimple out and that tears your skin.it takes three days for a pimple to heal itself but 14 days if you take the matter into your own hands.

  • C'River Flags Off 2nd Round of Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week and Mass Covid-19 Vaccination

...Targets over 900,000 children and 300,000 pregnant women

Cross River State is poised to deliver a basket of health care services to women and children under an integrated package of highly cost-effective MNCH interventions.

Pregnant women and children are set to benefit from the various forms of health interventions which includes nutritional supplementation of Vitamin A, delivery kits, vaccination, distribution of long lasting insecticide treated nets, deworming, screening for malnutrition in the State to help reduce the prevalence of malnutrition, malaria, vaccines preventable diseases among other common causes of maternal and child mortality. The state also flagged off its massive Covid-19 vaccination campaign for person over 18 years of age.

The flagging off exercise which was done by the State's Health Commissioner, Dr Betta Edu on behalf of the State Governor, Sen (Prof) Ben Ayade, targets over 900,000 children and 300,000 pregnant women across the State. The event which took place in Odukpani LGA also marked the commencement of the mass Covid-19 vaccination campaign across the State.

Declaring the commencement of both exercises open, Dr Betta Edu assured families of government's commitment towards eradicating every vaccine preventable diseases as well as the continued fight against common causes of deaths in pregnant women and children. She called on all Cross Riverians to take the Covid-19 vaccination if they have not yet taken it, noting that the new Super Variant Omicron is very dangerous.

This integrated intervention, according to Dr Edu, is preventive in nature and aimed at building demand for health services across the state.

"It is completely free and health workers are expected to create awareness working with communities. It's better and more cost effective for us to prevent diseases rather than cure them.

"I want to encourage our women to take the responsibility of accessing medical care during pregnancy to help keep them and their babies safe. Our traditional and religious leaders need to also see it as a duty to support government and our health workers in advising pregnant women to always register for antenatal services so they can get medical services like screening for HIV/AIDs, vaccinations, routine drugs, awareness on maternal and child dietary requirements as well as giving birth in health facilities under standard professional care.

"Malnutrition screening across the State, deworming of our children as well as the administration of Vitamin A supplement is ongoing as this will help promote a healthy living and prevent our children from diseases", she said.

Dr Edu, therefore, charged health workers to go to the field and carry out the exercise, while thanking all partners for their unflinching support and solicited that the maternal and newborn health week be extended to next week so the State can achieve a wider and better coverage.

On her part, the Director General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Janet Ekpenyong described the 2nd round of the Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week as a high impact intervention for mothers and children which is aimed at bridging the existing gap in communities as a result of the minimal access to healthcare services due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Health workers have been deployed to various communities to create more awareness. We therefore encourage our mothers to take their children to the closest healthcare centres in order to get access to Vitamin A supplements for children under age five, deworming tablets and immunization to guarantee full immunity against childhood killer diseases. Let me also call on our people to ensure they take the Covid-19 vaccine as that's the only remedy to keep us safe and free from the virus. The advocacy will continue and will even be taken to market places and churches as we must continue to do these things so our people can continue to live a healthy life.

Good will messages came from the Chairman of Odukpani LGA, Hon. Justina Edem who was ably represented by the LGA supervisor for health, Hon. Ndem Essiene, representative of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Dominic Elue, the State Coordinator of the NPHCDA, Mr Julius Idoko, W.H.O representative Mr Pella Umar, Nutrition International, traditional leaders, religious leaders.

Highpoints of the event was the administration of Vitamin A supplement, COVID-19 vaccination and distribution of delivery kits to pregnant women amongst others.

  • Asuquo Ekpenyong to African leaders: Youth Participation in AfCTA is Key Success Factor for Trade Agreement

    By Florence Kekong

As President Mohammadu Buhari traced Africa's existing challenges to inability to domesticate production of most basic requirements and provision of jobs to the teeming and dynamic youth population, Cross River State’s Representative at the just concluded Intra Africa Trade Conference, Durban, Mr. Asuquo Ekpenyong, had called on African Leaders to urgently create a pathway for youths to thrive in building their country’s economy.

The event enabled representatives of government and corporate bodies to take advantage of investment opportunities, Mr Asuquo Ekpenyong who is Cross River State’s Commissioner for Finance, revealed that the Cross River State Governor, Sir Ben Ayade understands the critical need to ensure total integration of youths in the local economy.

"Having understood that one of the greatest challenges facing the country at the moments stems from the non-utilization of the youth factor in our economy, the Governor, has taken steps to adopt the simplest ways to utilise their high level of energy through engagement in the agricultural sector," he explained.

The Commissioner opined that there’s a preponderance of subsistence farming in Africa today and in Nigeria in particular, it is only right that Governor Ayade chose to develop mechanized farming model to ensure efficient and effective output in the State.

He noted that there are several barriers that inhibit entry into Mechanized Farming such as the challenges of acquisition of large scale land, land preparation, acquisition of machinery/equipment, working capital etc.

"Therefore, what the Governor has done is to develop a 360 Degree Model to drive youth participation in mechanized farming. The administration intends to start by identifying young people in the State that are interested in agriculture, it thereafter will design a capacity building & skills acquisition programme to develop their skills and capabilities, the administration will proceed to acquire large parcels of land, as well as, develop/prepare them, demarcate and allocate them to beneficiaries of the training programs. These beneficiaries will also be provided with inputs and working capital. Under this 360 Model, the state ultimately intends to off-take the various produce and crops for processing in the state owned industries such as the Cocoa Processing Mill, The Rice Mill etc”, Ekpenyong reiterated.

The Commissioner posited that although preliminary processes have began and the program framework developed, the challenge to the program’s full implementation has been inadequate capital to facilitate the full program.

The Commissioner began the talk with statistics of the youth demographic, he stated that “On the continent today, there are approximately 541 Million people between the ages of 0 to 15 years, while a further estimated 455 Million people are between the ages of 16 to 35 years of age. This in effect means that for a continent of approximately 1.4 Billion people, people under the age of 35 account for over 70% of the population. This in effect means that the key success factor to the Trade Agreement is youth active participation and inclusion in the trade agreement”

He emphasized on the need to ensure there is a lot of sensitization about the trade agreements. He noted that if it wasn’t done during the formulation of policy there is a need for sensitization at the local level, at the grassroots level, in the rural & provincial towns, people need to know about this trade agreement.

"They need to be emotionally involved, actively involved; and just by the sheer providence of age and the logic of time, they have the greatest stake in this trade agreement because they have more active years of service and in commerce.”

"Now there are certain limitations in business that youths usually have. One is access to cheap capital. Most of the countries in Africa have weak infrastructure in terms of power, in terms of roads to provide logistics, water and other inputs required in production or commerce; says Ekpenyong.

  • HOW CULTURE CAN STRENGTHEN BONDS OF UNITY - OSINBAJO

The work of centers such as the International Centre For Yoruba Arts and Culture could become a base for how culture can help in building a more inclusive, fairer, and more just society, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo, who was speaking this afternoon at the launch of the Centre in Ibadan, the Ovo State capital, added that the Centre could strengthen the bonds of unity within an ethnically diverse nation such as Nigeria.

"The work of this Centre should also offer a base and sanctuary which reflects how Yoruba culture can contribute to the tools of nation-building," the VP stated.

Reflecting on President Muhammad Buhari's observation in 2018 that the rest of Nigeria could learn from the accommodating nature of Yorubas in South West regardless of religion, ethnicity, and politics, Prof. Osinbajo asked, "how can the rest of the nation learn as President Buhari observed, from the way Yorubas manage within their families to accommodate diverse faiths and beliefs?

"At a more reflective level, we will through this repository and the traditions embedded in the artworks and cultural artefacts, imbibe the triumphs, challenges, inventions, and spiritual heritage of the Yoruba people.

In the same vein, the Vice President noted that "culture is not just about the past, and it is neither static nor immutable, it is constantly creating and recreating;" and "progress is not merely determined by fidelity to tradition, but by our capacity for invention and reinvention"

Prof. Osinbajo further said Nigeria could further leverage its diversity to harness strength and raise development capital.

On the potential impact of the International Centre For Yoruba Arts and Culture, Prof. Osinbajo observed that "the World Centre will therefore serve not just as a place of memory, but as a place that inspires us and fires our collective imagination, even within the dynamic contexts of advances in technology, ideas and thought."

Equally, the Centre should also promote closer links between the Yoruba people in the homeland and their kin in the diaspora, he added.

In the same vein, the Vice President noted that "culture is not just about the past, and it is neither static nor immutable, it is constantly creating and recreating;" and "progress is not merely determined by fidelity to tradition, but by our capacity for invention and reinvention" Prof. Osinbajo further said Nigeria could further leverage its diversity to harness strength and raise development capital. On the potential impact of the International Centre For Yoruba Arts and Culture, Prof. Osinbajo observed that "the World Centre will therefore serve not just as a place of memory, but as a place that inspires us and fires our collective imagination, even within the dynamic contexts of advances in technology, ideas and thought." Equally, the Centre should also promote closer links between the Yoruba people in the homeland and their kin in the diaspora, he added. https://www.instagram.com/p/CWoft8kD0gp/?utm_medium=share_sheet
